Buses in Chinese towns are always crowded and the fare depends on distance which is payable to the conductor. The rail network forms the backbone of the Chinese transport system and serves most of cities. Visitors can explore much of China by train and many find it an efficient and inexpensive means of travel. The major shopping malls do not accept bargaining. However it is normally acceptable in most of the smaller shops. Chinas electrical system operates at 220 volts.
We recommend that you drink only bottled water or boiled water. Bottled water is available everywhere. It is a common practice for visitors to tip the tour guide and driver in recognition of their good service. The hotel bellboy expects a tip as well. It is not customary to leave tips at hotels or local restaurants as the bill usually includes 10-15% service charge.
